The UN Security Council has today passed a shameful resolution imposing sanctions against Eritrea. The unjustifiable measures imposed on Eritrea include: an arms embargo; the inspection and seizure by Member States in their territory of such cargo to and from Eritrea; and, the imposition of a travel ban, and the freezing of assets of, Eritrea’s political and military leadership who may be blacklisted by a Committee.

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. Security Council has approved an arms embargo and other tough sanctions against Eritrea for supplying weapons to opponents of the Somali government and refusing to resolve a border dispute with neighboring Djibouti.

Somalia — The officials of the Ogaden National Front (ONLF) guerillas have warned the oil searching companies operating in the Somali region under the Ethiopian control, official told Shabelle radio on Tuesday. Hussein Mohamed Nor, head of the information affairs of the Guerillas said in an interview with Shabelle radio that they would suggest the foreign companies to halt continuing oil searching operations in the region.

The Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), established in accordance with Human Rights Council resolution 5/1 of 18 June 2007, held its sixth session from 30 November to 11 December 2009. The review of Ethiopia was held at the 16th meeting on 9 December 2009. The delegation of Ethiopia was headed by Ambassador Fisseha Yimer, Special Adviser to the Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs. At its 17th meeting held on 11 December 2009, the Working Group adopted the present report on Ethiopia.

The United States of America today accused the Ethiopian government of favoring one ethnicity in appointing government positions. Mr. Douglas M. Griffiths, USA representative in the United Nations Human Rights Council, stated that: “Independent observers have noted…that most senior government positions are overwhelmingly represented by one ethnicity”

The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) strongly condemns the cowardly bombing of a medical student graduation ceremony in Mogadishu on 3rd December 2009. This attack against medical school graduates, their parents, instructors, and government officials was nothing less than an act of terrorism aimed at squashing the aspirations of those who intended to dedicate their lives to healing their fellow Somalis.
